Hi, I am new as of today and am just starting with the raw foods. I think your website has lots of great info. I was wondering if anyone else gets heartburn when they drink the smoothies and if anyone knows why I would get heartburn. I thought the raw foods would be alkaline enought to help me avoid that.

Thanks for your help.
Lorna :)

hi,

The list of foods are: 1/2 avacado, 2 celery stocks, 2 carrots, 2 kale leaves, parsley, 2 broccoli heads(about 2 cups), 1/2 cucumber, 1 apple, 1 pear, 1 orange, 1 mango. This makes a full vita mix and I split into 4 drinks and have it for the entire day. But after each drink I get heartburn. Any suggestions would be helpful because I would really like to give this way of eating a good try and want to avoid negative effects so I can be as successful with it as possible. Thanks for your help!

Hi Lorna
I think you might be making your drink to complicated. This is what I have every morning:
12 oz of water, 1 banana, handful of spinach, 1 tbsp of flax seeds ground in coffee grinder.
Give this simple recipe a try and see what results you get.
Also I think you need to make the smoothie up before you drink it otherwise the food starts to break down. Also you are losing most of the nutrients and all of the enzymes. The enzymes only stay alive for 10-15 minutes.
One other thing you might want to dry is digestive enzymes.

By the way, my name is also Lorna. Nice to meet another Lorna!

Hi Lorna, It is nice to meet another Lorna, there are not many people with that name. I was named after my Grandma.

I wanted to make sure that there was lots of nutrition in my green drinks but it is a good thought that maybe making a large container and drinking through the day is not a good idea. I was hoping to have something easy to eat through the day as I am in my car almost all day driving around and going to people's homes. It doesn't give my any time of facilities to make something.

What do you do for lunch?

I have digestive enzimes and will get them a try on a reg. basis with the drinks.

I was hoping I could come to the seminar this weekend but I have to work on Sat. and Sun is a family Easter day. So any advise is very helpful. Thanks for your help.
Lorna

Hi again,
May I suggest that you get a cooler and make up some snack type foods. Maybe cut up some veggies and fruit. Make a dip for the veggies. Maybe even put a salad together in a container and take some dressing separately. Also LaraBars are good. You can get them at Capers although they are cheaper at Walmart and Mountain Equipment Coop. You might want to try this website for recipes: http://goneraw.com/recipes. Victoria and Valya Boutenko are speaking on Friday night in Vancouver. This would be worth going to as Victoria is the Queen of Green Smoothies. After all she invented them. Here is that information:
Doors open at 6:00 PM
Where: Holy Trinity Anglican Church, upstairs Parish Hall
Address: 1440 West 12th Avenue, Vancouver (corner of 12th Ave & Hemlock)
Cost: General Public $25 / RawBC* members $20
RawBC* membership available at the event
RSVP: As this will be a popular event and seating is limited, RSVP to reserve your seat.
Contact: info@rawbc.org or if you have any questions call: 778-737-8852 or 604 566 0818.

Definitely check out The Boutenko's. Their teachings are truly incredible...and easy to understand and follow.

As a standard rule I never mix fruits and roots. I find they do not combine well and create a multitude of symptoms - like heartburn, gas and indigestion.

Simple is always better...and just change up your veggies, greens and fruits for variety.

My favorite smoothie is Mango, Banana, and Mixed Greens (Kale, Chard, Arugula) with a base of water or cooled medicinal tea.

Have fun!~Much Love!

I'm new to this site and I've already learned so much about smoothies. I had no idea that enzymes live for only 10 - 15 minutes, and I've been making big batch smoothies to last me for a couple of days! I've always wondered about mixing fruits with vegetables. I see that some of you do mix them. As long as it's not complicated with too many produce, is it alright to mix it?

(Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread.)

from what i've read it seems that green leafs are great mixed with fruit, but other vegetables mixed with fruit will cause some digestive upset for sensitive individuals.

I get heartburn from kale in smoothies, not sure why. But chard and other greens are no problem. I keep my smoothies simple, only fruit and green leafy veggies, but kale doesn't seem to work for me.

Hi! I've never had heartburn from eating any raw foods, but almost always get heartburn when eating cooked foods. These days I only use the leafy green part of kale and other greens in my smoothies, and I compost the stem. The stem is bitter and has a lot of fibre. Also, make sure you're eating a variety of leafy greens...not the same ones all of the time. Here's info from a handout I give people about smoothies which may be helpful. Enjoy your raw adventure! Rose

SCRUMPTIOUS SMOOTHIES

Smoothies are a quick and easy way to enjoy raw vegan foods. Their nutrients are easily absorbed and our body doesn’t use a lot of energy for digestion. If a Smoothie consists of approximately 60% fruits and 40% greens, it won’t taste ‘green’ and will provide minerals and vitamins your body needs. You might start by adding one or two leaves of a mild green (e.g. romaine lettuce or spinach) to a fruit Smoothie. When using strong-flavoured greens, or lots of leafy greens, adding lemon makes the Smoothie more palatable, plus it’s alkalizing to our body. Smoothies taste best and are most nutritious when fresh from the blender. To help preserve freshness for several hours, include lemon juice (it’s a natural preservative) and add ice after the Smoothie is blended.

Try to vary what you eat because each food contains different nutrients. Here are some foods you can add to smoothies:

FRUITS: apple, apricot, banana, berries, coconut, cucumber, currant, date, fig, goji berries, grapefruit, grape, lemon, lime, mango, melon, nectarine, orange, papaya, peach, pear, pineapple, plum, prune, raisin, rhubarb

GREENS: beet greens, carrot tops, celery, chard, edible weeds (e.g. chickweed, dandelion, lambsquarters, stinging nettle), fennel, grape leaves, kale, lettuce (e.g. romaine, green, red leaf), mint, mixed greens, parsley, sorrel, spinach, sprouts

ADDITIONAL NUTRIENTS & FLAVOURS: allspice, almonds, avocado, cinnamon, clove, flax seeds, ginger, hemp seeds, nutmeg, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds

ORANGE BANANA GREEN SMOOTHIE

QUANTITY: 4 cups
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 2 oranges (peeled)
- 1 banana (peeled )
- 1/4 cup dates (remove pits before measuring)
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger (doesn’t need to be peeled)
- 1 stalk celery
- 1/2 cup mild tasting greens (e.g. spinach, kale, romaine, carrot tops)
- 1 tablespoon hemp seeds, or sesame seeds

 Blend all ingredients until smooth. Enjoy!

I wanted to share a smoothie recipe with all of you that will be featured in the upcoming 'Seeds of Sustainability - Marche' Sprouting Method" educational DVD which is going to be released soon. This smoothie will help people who need to gain healthy weight and help people lose unhealthy weight.

2 cups water (can add more if it is too thick on blend)
3 cups raw cashews soaked over night and then blended in food processor with small amount of water to make a rich 'thick' cream
2 bananas
2 10 oz pckgs organic frozen strawberries
Agave (add to your own taste)
1/4 cup of raw living sunflower oil (instructions on how to make this is on the DVD - you can use the commercial organic sunflower oil)

Play with this simple recipe until you get the taste and blend perfect for your palette and you will swear it is the 'best smoothie ever"!

For a short time before the release of the DVD the team is offering a free DVD download to the project's community and I have permission to extend that invitation to all of you - the sign up form is on the front page of this site and you will be able to watch a short video about it:

Be well
Robin
